Overview of Activities

It was so much fun! Learned a lot and saw great birds and met some awesome people. I think the young birders club is amazing and I’m glad I got to learn about that as well. Great treats for breakfast and to buy as well. Loved the bird friendly coffee I bought. 

ABA Community Weekend in Fort Myers, FL

We had a great time. The ABA folks spotted birds, got the scope on, & let everyone see the bird. The Young Birders also added to the good experience. They hear, spot, and let us know, before most others. Also humble, just bird with no pretensions. It was a good group & the Short-tailed hawk made the birding for me.

Unfortunately, due to last minute family issues I was unable to attend the Saturday events. I was able to attend the Six Mile Slough field trip. Kelly and Nate are great ambassadors for the ABA. The event was very well organized and all the leaders were very knowledgeable. The coffee and pastries were a nice touch. I was really glad I was able to attend the one event.
  I hope I will be able to attend another Community Weekend.

I had a great time on this trip.  We saw more birds than I hoped for, and the entire group was great.  The trip was well organized, and the guides were fantastic.  Food and accommodations were top notch.

ABA Travel 2025: Costa Rica

Excellent organization, excellent choice of birding locations, excellent food and accommodations, and really excellent birding guides!!! The size of the group was also just right—any more, and it would have been difficult to provide good looks and photo ops to everyone.

ABA Community Weekend in Pittsburgh, PA

Had a fantastic time, would love to participate in future events.

We saw lots of birds, particularly endemics, ate well, and enjoyed cool nature lodges.

It was 2 great days of birding right in my own backyard. The leaders were very knowledgeable. The presentations were very informative. I would definitely do it again!

It had ups and downs. The 2 outings drew lots of participants and had good leaders. The one afternoon program I attended had good speakers, but didn't draw much of a crowd. It was held in a hall that couldn't be darkened, and had a slide projector so small and weak that the pictures on the screen weren't very visible.

Great time birding, attending lectures and social at the pub.  Good opportunity to meet other birders that I had not met before.  Kelly from ABA had everything well planned and organized, especially for the large number of participants who attended. Thank you.  Should do the ABA Community Weekend near Pittsburgh again.
 

The weekend was a success!  I was a field trip leader and presenter.  I read positive comments from participants on our local Discord Channel. 

The event was well organized and everything stayed on schedule. The field trip I attended went well and the presentations (not rating my own) were good and I learned from them.

The birding folks were very welcoming of us novice birders. My son and I attended one morning session and saw some birds and learned a lot. Thank you ABA.

This was my first time traveling with ABA, and I would absolutely travel with them again.  Excellent guides, people, itinerary, food, driver, and everything in between.  Newfoundland is a special place and seeing the puffins was a life highlight. Could not have asked for a better first birding trip.

ABA Travel 2025: Private Colorado Tour

Outstanding trip! Well-planned, organized, and executed.

We had a fantastic time. The group guides were amazing. 

I just returned from an unforgettable trip to Newfoundland with the American Birding Association, and I can say it was one of the best birding experiences of my life.

From the moment we arrived, the landscapes took our breath away—rugged coastlines, sweeping vistas, and endless skies made the perfect backdrop for birding. And the birds! Newfoundland is a birder’s paradise. We were treated to incredible sightings: Atlantic Puffins by the thousands, Northern Gannets, Common Murres stacked along rocky cliffs, and even the elusive boreal species deep in the forests. And the rarities! How amazing!

What truly elevated the trip, though, were our guides Jared and Katinka. Knowledgeable, patient, and deeply passionate about birds and the region, they brought the entire experience to life. Their ability to locate and identify birds by both sight and sound was extraordinary, and their storytelling added depth and context that made every sighting even more meaningful.

And the food—absolutely delicious. 

This wasn’t just a birding trip; it was pure joy for me. Thank you ABA!

The trip was wonderful.  The guides Jared and Katinka were so incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.  Jared's knowledge of the local geology, plants and culture really enriched the trip.  They made sure everyone  could see all the birds and helped when needed. The accommodations were fine and the food likewise,...loved the picnic lunches.  I am already planning a return trip.

Excellent trip.   The guide, Jared, is local, experienced, and thoughtful.   He has excellent depth of knowledge about Newfoundland.  He and Katinka, the organizer, had a wonderful itinerary that included not just birds but also local important sites and cultural information.    And we saw whales while out on the seabirds trip.  The accommodations were fine, except that wifi did not work in our cabin due to a broken wire and did not get fixed while we were there.   The pre-trip information we received was very helpful.   

A perfect blend of birding, scenery, great accommodations, historic cities and great food.  The group size of six was near perfect as was the camaraderie.  I could not have asked for a better experience blending all the things I seek when traveling.

ABA Travel 2025: Southern Spain

Everything was well planned. Our guides were personable and knowledgeable. Only one pre-breakfast morning, other days we were on the road between 8 am and 8:30 am. Nice diversity of habitats visited. Our guides did a great job managing the diversity of the group. Food was excellent and cultural experiences were appropriately spaced amongst the birding.

Katinka does a marvelous job organizing trips and this was no exception. The accommodations were all excellent, the food was great but most of all, the local guide she engaged - Yeray - was truly outstanding. Six birders is the perfect size for a ten day trip. Well done! 

Yes, this was a great trip. Very well organised and all the arrangements worked out well. I was very pleased with the accommodation, meal and travel arrangements. The two guides worked extremely hard to find the birds for our group to see and we had good views of large numbers of species. The before (Seville) and after (Madrid) hotel arrangements were particularly beneficial for my travel plans.

Great guides, yummy food, and delightful accommodations. Could not have been better.

The trip was canceled for insufficient participation

Thanks to Katinka, I had a great time with ABA this weekend in Sacramento. This was my first weekend to go birding and I couldn't think of a better way to get started. The loaner equipment was a real bonus. Thanks to all involved...

I enjoyed the topic. Microphone was not used so it  was hard to hear and understand speaker.  He definitely knows his topic. Needs to speak slower and clearer.

Great weekend with excellent locations and information. Event leaders were organized and super knowledgeable. Hoping they do it again next year.

We enjoyed the shorebird presentation by Dennis Paulson!   A great event hosted by ABA!

Enjoyed two of the bird walks, one at Discovery Park and the other at Union Bay. Many knowledgeable birders. Great talk by Dennis Paulson on shore birds. Binoculars and camera equipment available for those who needed it. Kelly, ABA staff, was terrific. Very organized and helpful.

Excellent locations for bird walks with excellent trip leaders. Great option to try out binoculars both days. Community weekend well organized, providing optics, photography, bird walks, presentations, social hour - something for everyone. Living southwest of Seattle I chose not to attend the offerings taking place on the east side, but appreciated them. Dennis Paulson’s shorebird class very tempting! 

Well planned and great venues. Really enjoyed meeting local peeps, Kelly and the OM team. 

I had a blast. I saw many birds that, had I gone to the Fill by myself, I would not have seen. Penny Rose is a rock star.

This was a totally wonderful experience, expert birders, great technical help, and all around good time learning!

Thank you for organizing this bird walk. I had never been to Union Bay Natural Area before. 
I appreciated being able to borrow binoculars and camera to try them out.  My one piece of feedback is that the info about the event didn't contain any mention of the fact that there were no restrooms anywhere nearby. That would've been good to know ahead of time, and it's something I usually see addressed by bird walk organizers that I've encountered in the past. 

As experienced birders, we were a little out of place at this event as most of the attendees were beginners or non-birders.  We enjoyed the opportunity to hear from "the two Waynes" but overall the morning wasn't worthwhile for us.

ABA Community Weekend in Boston, MA

It was excellent- learned a lot and met some wonderful people. 

Had a great time! It was a great opportunity to meet ABA peeps and other birders. Good locations and good speaker topics. Well planned.

The walk was poorly organized. Too much talk, not enough birding. The birds were scarce but we didn’t spend time at the only tree with a nice mixed flock. No one seemed to be helping the new birders. 

This was certainly one of the best weeks of my life. Not only were there so many opportunities to see amazing birds (Brown Booby, Curlew Sandpiper, Sanderling, Black Skimmer, to name a few highlights), but the leaders were so incredibly fun to talk to as well as instructive. If you had a question about any topic, somebody would be able to answer it in great detail. It was also wonderful to finally be around other people my age who were as fascinated with birds as I was; this is an opportunity that I rarely get. The locations we visited (everywhere from forests to mudflats) were also great and I especially enjoyed getting great shots of birds in the ocean at Cape Henlopen State Park. Even the food was great! For any young person interested in birding, this camp is just about as good as it gets. 

ABA Camp Delaware Bay

Once in a lifetime camp for our daughter! Not only did she add to her life bird list, she made lifelong friends and mentors! Words are not enough to express our sincere appreciation to Holly, Glen, Bill, Christina and Josh! They all deserve the highest accolades that we can offer! 

Great trip! My son is an avid birder and had a great time being introduced to new species and to kids his age who had similar interests. I felt my son was in good hands in Camp Delaware Bay. The counselors were good at communicating and experts in their field. This camp was a good stepping stone to a future career in the natural sciences. 5/5 stars! Highly recommend!

I had an enjoyable weekend speaking with OM System and ABA staff. The bird walk was at a nice pace and Mike’s Camera in-store presentations were informative. Bonus was Mike’s Camera generous discount on OM System products and for various camera gear. 

ABA Community Weekend in Boulder, CO, July 13-14, 2024

We had a great time. I enjoyed spending time with fellow bieders. Great bird walks and a great presentation by Tykee.

I had a great time and met some amazing people!

The Saturday outing was very rewarding with many different species (lots of raptors!) and excellent leadership provided by Ted Floyd. Sunday's outing fell to a back-up location due to a wildfire at NCAR. Still, Ted Floyd put a good morning together complete with a hummingbird feeding on spiders dangling over Boulder Creek. Great two day event. Thanks ABA!

We had an incredible time being with other young birders and our amazing hosts at the Schoodic Institute. My son learned so much and had a great time. Laura and Jason were so helpful and so great with the kids and the adults.
